*UNDER REVISION. As of 7/1/09 the Avon Library can no longer Interlibrary Loan items from out-of-state, due to budget cuts. Items may be ordered only from within the state of CT.

The Avon Public Library will assist patrons in the procurement of any circulating item available in the greater library community. Connecticut residents with a valid public library may request materials not owned by the Avon Public Library through the interlibrary loan process.  All types of materials may be requested through interlibrary loan but the actual loan of the materials is left to the discretion of the lending library.

  • A limit of five requests per patron per day will be processed by staff.
  • Both Avon and non-resident patrons may request interlibrary loan items but must pick them up at Avon.
  • Library staff will assist patrons in locating materials. Limited requests may be photocopied, emailed, faxed, or mailed to Avon.  Patrons should seek assistance from the Reference Desk staff with interlibrary loan questions.
  • The Avon Public Library does not charge a fee for interlibrary loans but in some cases the lending library may impose a fee, especially for items requested from academic libraries.
  • Patrons will be asked to pay lending library postage fees associated with acquiring items, as well as any photocopy costs associated with obtaining article or journal requests.
  • The usual turnaround time for interlibrary loans is two weeks but the Avon Library cannot guarantee the material will be lent or that it will arrive by a certain time.
  • New materials, especially new books, media items, and DVDs are rarely available through interlibrary loan.  Patrons should check with the library staff to see if an item is on order at Avon or fill out a request –to-purchase form.
  • Patrons will be telephoned when the material arrives.  It will be held for three days. If the item is not picked up within that time frame any applicable postage or photocopying costs will be assessed to the patron’s record and the item will be returned.
  • The loan period is usually three weeks for books and one week for videos or DVDs.  The lending library may have a different policy.  There are no renewals on materials borrowed from academic libraries or from materials borrowed from out of state libraries.
  • If an interlibrary loan item is damaged or lost, the patron will be responsible for the replacement costs that are set by the lending library. The Avon Public Library has no control over these fees.
  • If material is requested for interlibrary loan at Avon, it MUST be returned to Avon.
