The Amazing Castle™ Comes to Avon Library

The Avon Free Public Library is pleased to announce the arrival of The Amazing Castle™ – a magical place where visitors can become inhabitants of a castle village! Created by the Minnesota Children’s Museum and making its first appearance in Connecticut, families and children can learn community values while playing in this interactive exhibit.

The free exhibit will be open 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. Mondays, Tuesday, and Thursdays; Wednesdays from 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays; 10 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., and Sundays from 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. through April.

“Bringing this exhibit to Avon gives families the opportunity to experience something unique, imaginative and creative in a library setting,” Children’s and Teen Services Manager Kari Ann St. Jean said.

The exhibit features eight themed areas where children can don costumes and engage in role-playing by becoming lords and ladies, villagers and even a court jester. Visitors can try their hands in royal workshops where a blacksmith, tailor, gardener, cook and others work and visit a tower where a sleeping dragon resides.

Upon entering the castle, visitors will find graphic panels that introduce Lord Ben and Lady Evolent and the castle community. A large book that tells the castle’s story is nearby for visitors to read.

Children can play with a castle-inspired dollhouse and build their own fortress out of “stone” blocks. Friends and family can take a seat at the royal table in the Great Hall while children prepare a meal using food from the royal pantry and garden. Then they can become castle entertainers in the royal puppet theater and dress up in costumes to model in a distorted mirror. Before leaving the library, children can try to wake Herald the Dragon. If successful, Herald will greet visitors before falling back asleep.

The Amazing Castle™ exhibit was created by the Minnesota Children’s Museum with funding from Curtis and Marjorie Nelson and The Curtis L. Carlson Family Foundation. It’s appearance at Avon Library is sponsored by the Friends of the Avon Library and Carmon Funeral Home with special thanks to the Town of Avon Public Works Department.

Who is Oliver Queen?

My name is Oliver Queen, and I am the superhero vigilante, Green Arrow!
I am a billionaire that fights crime using archery, martial arts and technology. I manage the crime throughout my home, Star City alongside Team Arrow, which is composed of: Connor Hawke, Speedy (Red Arrow) and my wife, Black Canary.
As a kid, the outlaw, Robin Hood, became one of my favorite stories.  As I was growing up, due to this fascination, I took a special interest in archery. My parents were happy for me and constantly took me on hunting trips so I could improve. Life was perfect until disaster struck when my parents were mauled by lions while we were on one of these safaris.
It was my fault…
My hesitation to kill the heartless creatures in front of me caused my parents to get killed, and I vowed to never let something so foolish happen again. I learned that whenever a shot present itself, I should take it to protect those that I loved and although it was sad, it was probably the most valuable lesson that life could have taught me.
After my parents died, I started living with my uncle until I inherited my family’s massive fortune. I decided to use this newfound money and buy myself a boat! Then it happened…
I fell off my boat in the middle of the ocean and ended up on a remote island called Starfish Island. The only reason I even made it was because the replica Robin Hood bow I was grasping onto somehow kept me afloat until I washed ashore after the accident.
During my time on the island without food and shelter I developed my skills as a hunter, and gained mastery over my bow. I worked hard to learn self-reliance and maturity, becoming the vigilante that the Star City Police Department knows all too well. I grew confident enough to bust the massive drug operation taking place on the island, and eventually signaled a nearby boat which brought me back to civilization. 
On the island, I realized that I had found my destiny!
I would use my resources, archery abilities and fighting skills to become a crime fighter.

I would stand up for the people who had not learned to protect themselves!

Who is Hal Jordan?

My name is Hal Jordan, and I am the Green Lantern of Sector 2814.
I am to be the most well-known Green Lantern and the first human ever inducted to the intergalactic peacekeeping force known as the Green Lantern Corps.
After my father died in a plane crash, I swore to follow in his footsteps and learn how to fly, no matter how dangerous it might be! I proved my worried family wrong, faced my fears, and became one of the best pilots that the United States Air Force had ever seen!
I never knew flying would lead me to finding Abin Sur, the dying Green Lantern. I was on the job in the Californian desert, when I saw something that looked like a spaceship destroyed on the barren surface below. I went down to investigate, I found a purple alien in a green suit with life threatening injuries. He took the ring off of his finger and gave it to me! He told me that he was selecting me as the next Green Lantern for Sector 2814.
 He looked into my past and saw my strong ability to overcome fear, and knew I was the one who should take up his position. Using my Ring of Willpower, I would fight off intergalactic threats and make sure this part of the universe’s life stayed safe.
Later, I was transported to the Green Lantern Corps headquarters, where I learned that there were 3599 other Green Lanterns coming from planets across the universe. We were empowered by mystical creatures called the Guardians who were mysterious and powerful. After receiving my training from my mentor, Sinestro, I knew that I was destined to show the world that will power was the strongest force in the galaxy.
When I became a pilot at a young age, I never imagined that I would grow up to fly around to different planets protecting its inhabitants from the great unknown. However, as time passed, I realized that the world was full of fear, anger and destruction and now using my power ring, I was there to show people that there was power in believing in yourself!

Who is Barry Allen?

My name is Barry Allen, and I am the fastest man alive!
To understand what I am about to tell you, you need to believe in the impossible!
Can you do that for me? Okay, good.
Before all this speedster stuff, I was just a guy working as an assistant scientist from the Criminal and Forensic Science Division of the Central City Police Department.  I guess my job was simple enough, and I liked working at the police station. My job description involved often being brought to the crime scene to analyze evidence of crime and murder. I would take my samples and leave to go back to my lab to run tests and solve the case.
As I came and went through my lab, I noticed that nobody except the police chief, Joe West, liked me very much. While I was smart, I was often looked disheveled, acted slow and usually late for important police meetups. I wasn’t what you would call an amazing person.
However, while I working on some evidence in my lab one night, everything!
The storm brewing above the building sent out a freak lightning bolt which struck a shelf in my lab, and doused me in electrically charged chemicals.

When I woke up, I found that I could run extremely fast, had quick reflexes and supernatural healing. I knew at that moment that the lightning bolt had chosen me for something greater! I was now tasked with running around Central City, saving people and inspiring them in a flash!

Who is Diana Prince?

My name is Diana Prince, and I am an almighty princess from the island called Themyscira.
I am an Amazon Warrior who has the power of flight and superhuman strength, speed, durability, and life-force. I possess strong backgrounds in hand-to-hand combat, which have helped me gain sharp intuition and acute senses. I also have the useful the ability to speak multiple languages, allowing me to become allies with anyone on the battlefield.
My two favorite weapons are my Lasso of Truth, and my indestructible bracelets but you can often see me wielding a sword or shield while wearing my beloved Boomerang Tiara.
I was born out of magic! My mother wished for me, and the Greek God of the Sky, Zeus brought me to life after my mother shaped me out of clay. I was born on the island of Themyscira and become known was Princess Diana from the day forward.
Themyscira was a secret land filled entirely with powerful female warriors called Amazons.
I was the daughter of their queen, Hippolyta, who constantly led our kind to greatness.
We all lived in safety on the island, away from the male dominated world that we had been cautious of our whole life. I was training to become on the best warrior our kind had ever seen alongside my aunt, Antiope, who wanted to make sure I could protect myself during and invasion from the outside world.
Eventually I met a man by the name of Steve Trevor, who crash landed his plane on our island. After interrogating him with the Lasso of Truth, my people learned of a “World War” going outside the safety of our protected island. He spoke of the countless deaths of women, children, and animals at the hands of people fighting over seemingly nothing.

I felt compelled to help so in secret I left the safety of Themyscria with Steve and fought in the war alongside Steve Trevor and his English compatriots. When I stepped on the battle field, I used my superhuman abilities to protect the innocent and stop pointless violence. From that day forward, I knew I had to stay and continue my job as “Wonder Woman”!

Who is Bruce Wayne?

My name is Bruce Wayne, and I am the superhero protector of Gotham City.
(I am not really a superhero because that implies that I have super powers….)
I am simply just a billionaire, who happens to be one of the world’s smartest men and greatest fighters.
Oh, and did I mention sometimes at night I get dressed like a bat who fights evil and strikes terror into the heart of criminals everywhere?
When I was a young child, I had to watch my parents murdered before my eyes. My family and I were walking from the theater one night, when my parents were held up at gunpoint by a mugger who wanted the pearl necklace that my Mom was wearing. When she refused, both my parents were shot dead on site by the crazed man.  I couldn’t believe it! I had lost everything from the crime that ran through Gotham City, so from that day I vowed to learn how to fight and protect the innocent people in the dark.
Ever since that day, I have been raised in the Wayne Manor by my butler, Alfred Pennyworth. He has helped me develop the alter ego of Batman as I learned how to fight. I also built the Bat Cave to house my crime fighting operation under our mansion.
I used my company Wayne Enterprises to fund the super suit I would later wear every night in the shadows. My employee, Lucius Fox, helped me to develop the cutting-edge technology that allowed me to glide from rooftop to rooftop, and grapple up skyscraper. He also invented the Batmobile, which sometimes I use to get to locations fast.
If you ever need my help, all you need to do is call me with the Bat Signal!

I’ll be there to help as quick and quietly as a bat in the night.

Who is Kal-El?

My name is Kal-El and I am the most powerful being on the planet Earth.
I am an alien who has the powers of flight, superhuman strength, x-ray vision, heat vision, cold breath, super-speed and enhanced hearing!
I am technically from the planet Krypton, but when my birth parents saw our home was dying, they put me into a spaceship and sent me to Earth so I would survive. I was then raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent after my spaceship crash-landed by their home in Smallville, Kansas. They adopted me as their son, and gave me the name, Clark Kent!
My abilities began to slowly show themselves as I grew up in our small town, and eventually my parents revealed my true origins to me! From that day on, I decided to start fighting crime as my alter ego, Superman! I had extraordinary gifts due to my heritage, and I wanted to help innocent people, and stop evil wherever and whenever I could.
When I’m not fighting crime, I am working! After finishing college, I started working at the Daily Planet as a reporter. I write a lot of stories, mostly about Superman saving the day! Through this job, I was able to meet my girlfriend, Lois Lane and my friend, Jimmy Olsen!

Every day, I fly through the streets of Metropolis protecting its citizens in any way I can. I never imagined that after stitching together costume in my backyard that I would one day become the superhero everybody knows as, Superman!
