Teen Readers Unite book discussion group is for you if:

Do you like to read Young Adult literature? Do you like reading books before everyone else? Do you like getting a FREE book?

We will discuss: WE CONTAIN MULTITUDES by Sarah Henstra and AMELIA WESTLAKE WAS NEVER HERE by Erin Gough on Tuesday February 12th, from 5-6 PM in the Teen Room.

Open to teens in Grades 7-12.

Sign up & book claiming for this TRU discussion will begin 4 PM Thursday January 10th, in person at the 2nd Floor Children’s Reference Desk.

You will pick up your advance reader copy right then and there!

Summaries:

WE CONTAIN MULTITUDES: Jonathan Hopkirk and Adam “Kurl” Kurlansky are partnered in English class, writing letters to one another in a weekly pen pal assignment. With each letter, the two begin to develop a friendship that eventually grows into love. But with homophobia, bullying, and devastating family secrets, Jonathan and Kurl struggle to overcome their conflicts and hold onto their relationship…and each other.

AMELIA WESTLAKE WAS NEVER HERE:

Harriet is the perfect student: smart, dutiful, over-achieving. Will is a troublemaker. When a staff’s inappropriate behavior is swept under the rug, the unlikely duo reluctantly team up: pulling  pranks and creating the legendary Amelia Westlake–an imaginary student who helps right the many wrongs of their privileged institution. But everyone wonders who is Amelia Westlake?–and between Harriet and Will, how long can they keep their secret? How far will they go to make a difference? And when will they realize they’re falling for each other?

Wednesday Teen Pizza Taste Off

What is it? 3 days of blind taste testing local pizza places in and around Avon, CT.

Wednesday Pizza Taste Off (4 mystery pizzas) is Wed. February 6th, 3-4 PM.

This event is made possible by the Friends of the Avon Library.

 

If registration is full: come the day of, check in with Miss Marisa, and add your name to the waitlist. If teens don’t show up by 3:05 PM,  you can take an open spot.

Family Holiday Night: Graham Cracker ‘Gingerbread House’ and Card Making!

When: Wednesday December 19th, 6:00-8:00 PM

Where: 1st Floor Community Room, Avon Free Public Library

Who can come? ALL ages are welcome! 0-100+ can enjoy this fun event!

What are we doing?

Take some time with your loved ones to create your own graham cracker ‘gingerbread house.’

We will also have card making supplies for you to create thoughtful cards for veterans, seniors citizens, and those in children’s hospitals.

All supplies provided for both cards and house making.

This joint program put on by the Avon Youth Services Bureau and Avon Free Public Library

Who can attend: Teens in Grades 7-12.

When: Thursday 11/29, 6-7pm.

What: The mberry is a special fruit that changes how your tongue perceives the food you eat. We will eat food that is normally sweet and food that is normally sour. If you’re brave…come temporarily twist your taste buds!

Library provides: mberry Frootie tablet and both sweet and sour foods to try.

Teen Cupcake Wars!

Teen Cupcake Wars

Who can attend: Teens entering Grades 7-12.

When: Thursday 7/19, 5-8pm. Please check in by 5pm for this program.  Due to high demand of teen programs, if you show up 5 minutes past the start time of the program, the library can give your seat away to a waitlisted teen.

What: You and 4 other teens will create teams of 5 (you get to choose the teams once  you arrive and check in). There will 100 unfrosted cupcakes and 2 rounds: 1 round is decorating skills, 1 round is mystery ingredients. There will be a demonstration of how to using different frosting tips to ice your cupcakes in the frosting you and your team makes from scratch! You get to each some of each teams’ cupcakes. Come hungry.*

*not recommended for teens with food sensitivities.
