Some of the films in this series may not be available through the library; we wanted to match the theme of the exhibit, and apologize for any inconvenience.

This series ties in with the Exploring Human Origins: ALA Traveling Exhibit that will be at the library from December 1–January 15, 2025. We’ll be looking at human history and our sustainable future on the planet. All discussions will take place at 7:00pm on Zoom.

11/18: The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind, 2019, Directed by and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, this film, based on a true story,  follows a thirteen year old boy in Malawi who builds a windmill, using do it yourself methods to save his family and village from drought and famine. 11/25: David Attenborough, A Life on Our Planet, 2020, Directed by Alastair Fothergill, Jonathan Hughes and Keith Scholey. Focusing on the changing climate and it’s impact on the earth, David Attenborough reflects upon the devastating changes he has seen in his lifetime. Available on Netflix. View the trailer here

12/2: The Dig, 2021, Directed by Simon Stone. Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes star in this British drama focusing on a 1938 archaeological dig championed by an amateur archaeologist. The search to unearth Anglo-Saxon history comes to life in this compelling film. Available on Netflix. View the trailer here

12/9: Inherit the Wind, 1960 Directed by Stanley Kramer. Based on a real-life case of the Scopes trial in 1925, two great lawyers argue the case for, and against, a Tennessee science teacher accused of the crime of teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution. Spencer Tracy and Gene Kelly star in this drama that is as timely today as it was 100 years ago. Available at the library, and on Amazon. View the trailer here

Bob Kagan taught Communications and film at Manchester Community College, Central Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford for over 40 years. He has been leading film discussions at the Avon Free Public Library for the past 7 years.
